QUICK HITS / EN BREF…

  • The CHL holds an all-time record of 60-21-1-6 in the event, winning 11 of the 14 series. The CHL comes off back-to-back series victories for the first time since 2008 and 2009.
  • The QMJHL holds an all-time record of 16-9-3 in the CIBC Canada Russia Series earning back-to-back wins over Russia last year. Team QMJHL won 4-0 in Chicoutimi before closing out the series with a 4-1 win in Baie-Comeau.
  • This marks the second consecutive year that the series has entered the QMJHL following split decisions in both the WHL and the OHL.
  • The CIBC Canada Russia Series comes to Charlottetown for the very first time.

 

SERIES NOTES / NOTES SUR LA SÉRIE

ABBANDONATO NAMED CAPTAIN: Nineteen year-old Rouyn-Noranda Huskies forward Peter Abbandonato will wear the ‘C’ for Team QMJHL. The former President Cup Champion will be joined by assistsants Antoine Morand (Acadie-Bathurst Titan), Drake Batherson (Cape Breton Screaming Eagles) and fan favourite Pierre-Olivier Joseph (Charlottetown Islanders).

BATHERSON LEADS QMJHL SCORING: Ottawa Senators prospect Drake Batherson (Cape Breton Screaming Eagles) enters play tonight as the QMJHL’s leading scorer. The 19-year-old has 17 goals, 17 assists and 34 points over 20 games this season.

GOLDEN QUARTET: Four players of particular intrigue on a younger than usual Team QMJHL squad are all 2000-born gold medalists from the 2017 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup this past summer. Halifax Mooseheads teammates Benoit-Olivier Groulx and Jared McIsaac join Noah Dobson (Acadie-Bathurst Titan) and standout forward Joe Veleno (Saint John Sea Dogs) in the Team QMJHL lineup tonight.

HARVEY MAKES HUSKIES HISTORY: Team QMJHL goaltender Samuel Harvey (Rouyn-Noranda Huskies) recently made franchise history in Rouyn-Noranda, earning his 75th career victory last Wednesday against Shawinigan. The 19-year-old Harvey was Rouyn-Noranda’s second round pick in 2014. He won a President Cup title with the club in 2016.

ENTER ABRAMOV, RUBTSOV AND KOLTYGIN: Team Russia has played four games in two different provinces, but some high quality reinforcements are on the way. 2017 QMJHL MVP and Columbus Blue Jackets prospect Vitalii Abramov (Gatineau Olympiques) slots into the lineup along with returning World Junior bronze medalist German Rubtsov (Acadie-Bathurst Titan) and Nashville Predators prospect Pavel Koltygin (Drummondville Voltigeurs).
