Russia captured the CIBC Canada Russia Series for the fourth time, taking an 11-7 victory in points.

The 16th edition of the CIBC Canada Russia Series didn't disappoint as Russia, despite losing the first game of the series against Team WHL, battled back to claim an 11-7 series victory in points following three consecutive wins in Games 4, 5 and 6.

It marks Russia's fourth series victory in the 16-year history of the event and the first time they've triumphed despite losing the series opener. The series was clinched on Dmitry Zavgorodniy's (Rimouski Oceanic) late tying goal in Game 6 to force overtime before Saveliy Olshansky scored the game winner for Russia in Drummondville.

The Russian series victory is their first since 2014. They've gone on to win one gold (2011), one bronze (2013) and one silver (2015) following past CIBC Canada Russia Series triumphs.

Canada’s National Junior Team has gone on to win silver (2011) and gold (2015) in past years where the CHL has lost the series.

Team Russia’s Stepan Starkov led the event in scoring, coming one point shy of tying a Russian event record with six points (1-5--6), registering at least one in five of the six games he played. Russian defenceman Saveliy Olshansky set a new event record for defencemen with five points (1-4--5) over six games.

One representative from each of the CHL's three leagues finished in a three-way tie for the CHL's series scoring lead. Arizona Coyotes prospect Barrett Hayton (Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds) had a goal and an assist, Pittsburgh Penguins prospect Connor Dewar (Everett Silvertips) recorded a pair of assists and Rafael Harvey-Pinard (Rouyn-Noranda Huskies) had a pair of assists as well as the trio finished with two points each. Click here for player stats

In goal, Russian netminder Pyotr Kochetkov became just the third goaltender to earn three wins in the event, going 3-0 with a 0.67 goals-against average and .978 save percentage. He also became just the fourth Russian goaltender to earn a shutout. The CHL's top goaltending performance came from Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Ian Scott (Prince Albert Raiders), who turned aside 27 saves in Team WHL's 2-1 victory in Game 1. Click here for goalie stats

54 players either signed or drafted by NHL clubs competed in the series from across the three CHL teams, including 13 first round selections. The Russian National Junior Team included 15 NHL draft picks, with one first rounder.

The CHL now has an overall record of 63-25-2-6 dating back to 2003 while Russia comes away at 33-60-0-3. The QMJHL holds an all-time record of 17-11-1-3, the OHL has played to a 25-6-0-1 mark and the WHL is now 21-8-1-2. Click here for event history and results

The series is used as an evaluation for Canada’s National Junior Team that will compete in the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship to be played in Vancouver, BC. The tournament will run from December 26 to January 5.

Drummondville, QC - The QMJHL was just 14 seconds away from heading to a series-deciding shootout for the second straight year but a perfectly executed offensive zone faceoff allowed Russia's Dmitry Zavgorodniy (Rimouski Oceanic) to tie the score at two, securing Russia's fourth-ever CIBC Canada Russia Series victory.

Blueliner Saveliy Olshansky became the first defenceman to ever record five points in the annual event, hammering home a one-timer for the overtime winner 1:35 into the extra frame to put an exclamation mark on a 3-2 victory while giving Russia an 11-7 series win in points.

Russia's goaltending was up to the challenge once again as Columbus Blue Jackets prospect Daniil Tarasov took over in the crease to provide 34 saves as Team QMJHL fell short despite outshooting Russia 36-25.

Anaheim Ducks prospect Antoine Morand (Halifax Mooseheads) opened the scoring to bring the 2,719 at Centre Marcel Dionne to their feet, blazing down the left wing to lift a quick shot over the shoulder of Tarasov with assists from Rafael Harvey-Pinard (Rouyn-Noranda Huskies) and Justin Barron (Halifax Mooseheads) at 8:42.

Tarasov would deny 2019 NHL Draft prospect Raphael Lavoie (Halifax Mooseheads) on a one-timer from the slot late in the first to keep his squad within one and resumed his fine play into the second as Team QMJHL outshot Russia 14-6 in the middle frame.

Both Alexis Lafreniere (Rimouski Oceanic) and Joseph Veleno (Drummondville Voltigeurs) had grade-A chances in the second, breaking in alone to be stopped by Tarasov as the game spilled into the third period with the 'Q' still holding a 1-0 lead.

Russia went to work shortly after the flood as Stepan Starkov notched his series-leading sixth point, finding the back of the net for the second time with help from Pavel Shen just 19 seconds into play.

Team QMJHL would respond at 8:40 though, with Drummondville teammates Veleno and Nicolas Beaudin working together to set up New York Islanders prospect Noah Dobson who gave the 'Q' a 2-1 lead.

Zavgorodniy's tying goal came on a clean faceoff win by Artyom Galimov. The Calgary Flames prospect snapped a wrister over the shoulder of a screened Olivier Rodrigue (Drummondville Voltigeurs). Zavgorodniy would join fellow QMJHL Russian teammate Alexander Khovanov with an assist on Olshansky's overtime winner as Russia claimed its first series since 2014.

Russia went 1-for-6 on the power play while Team QMJHL was held to 0-for-3, marking the first time in event history that the CHL has gone an entire series without scoring on the man advantage. The three leagues went a collective 0-for-19 on the power play while scoring the lowest output by the CHL in event history, managing just nine goals over the six games.

The aforementioned Starkov led the series in scoring, registering points in five of his six games played for a total of two goals, four assists and six points. Boston Bruins prospect Pavel Shen led the event with three goals while Olshansky led blueliners with five points (1-4--5).

Russian netminders Tarasov (1-2, 2.33 GAA, .915 SV%) and Pyotr Kochetkov (3-0, 0.67 GAA, .978 SV%, 1 SO) were also instrumental in their team's success.

For the CHL, four players led the way with two points each including Team QMJHL's Harvey-Pinard (Rouyn-Noranda Huskies), Team OHL's Barrett Hayton (Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds) and Team WHL's Connor Dewar (Everett Silvertips).

The CHL wraps up the 16th edition of the CIBC Canada Russia Series with an overall record of 63-26-1-6 while Russia has played to an all-time mark of 33-60-0-3.

For the first time since 2014, the CHL enters Game 6 of the CIBC Canada Russia Series on the ropes.

Following back-to-back victories, Russia carries a 9-6 series lead in points into tonight's contest in Drummondville as Team QMJHL is tasked with winning in regulation before facing a shootout for the second straight year, one they'd have to win to claim series supremacy.

The host Voltigeurs, the 10th ranked team in the CHL this week, will give the home fans plenty to cheer about with five player in the lineup as head coach Steve Hartley serves as a Team QMJHL assistant alongside Jim Hulton (Charlottetown Islanders) behind the bench.

Drummondville's CHL record-tying fourth CIBC Canada Russia Series clash will also feature a Voltigeur suiting up for the opposition as Nashville Predators prospect Pavel Koltygin, who had two assists in Sherbrooke on Tuesday, will look to put Russia over the top for its first series win since 2014.

"We've get good crowds in Drummondville and it's a great fan base," said star blueliner Nicolas Beaudin. "You see them at the rink but also supporting us online too. It's good to know you have all those people behind you."

Beaudin's roommate Joseph Veleno echoed those sentiments, sharing his enjoyment of the Drummondville community since being acquired by the Voltigeurs in December 2017.

"It's a good little place for junior hockey," he affirmed. "We've got a really good team this year that can do a lot of surprising things. I think the biggest thing is that we're humble, we work hard and we look to get better every single day."

Team captain Nicolas Guay, New Jersey Devils prospect Xavier Bernard and tonight's starting goaltender, Edmonton Oilers prospect Olivier Rodrigue, join Beaudin and Veleno in the Team QMJHL lineup under Hartley, who is in his first season as head coach in Drummondville.

"He's been really good," said Veleno of Hartley, who is the son of former NHL bench boss turned KHL head coach Bob Hartley. "Not a lot has changed in terms of our habits and systems since Dom (Ducharme) left, so all the guys are pretty used to it. Everyone has respect for him and he's done a lot of good things with us, keeping us focused and disciplined."

Beaudin and Veleno shared a special moment this past summer in Dallas, being selected just a few slots away from each other by a pair of original six rivals in the first round of the 2018 NHL Draft. Beaudin went 27th overall to the Chicago Blackhawks while Veleno went 30th to the Detroit Red Wings, giving the Voltigeurs two first round picks in the same draft for the first time since 1988.

The two returned to Drummondville where the Voltigeurs are off to a 14-5-1-0 start to the season, outscoring opponents 87-56. Veleno (11-12--23) is in a three-way tie for the club scoring lead with Guay (10-13--23) and Gregor MacLeod (10-13--23) as each has 23 points on the campaign. Beaudin has missed some time due to injury, but has 12 points (2-10--12) through 11 games.

Tonight the two standouts look to lead the way to a QMJHL victory with what will need to be a much improved performance from Tuesday's 5-1 loss in Sherbrooke.

"I think they were quicker than us the other night," said Beaudin. "We gave them too much space. We made some adjustments at practice today and we just have to play quicker. You don't have time to handle the puck for two or three seconds, you have to move it right away.

"If we can make those adjustments in Drummondville I think we'll have a good chance to win."

Catch tonight's CIBC Canada Russia Series finale live on Sportsnet and TVA Sports when the puck drops at 7 ET/4 PT. The game can also be seen streaming live at CHLLIVE.com.
