Bathurst, NB – After a successful night for the CHL on Monday in Kingston after a 5-1 Team OHL victory, the 2014 SUBWAY Super Series sees a fast turnaround into Game 5 on Tuesday. Team Russia will regroup and get some key offensive reinforcements inserted into the lineup against a QMJHL squad that is built for success from the net out with the presence of Halifax Mooseheads goaltender Zachary Fucale and Rimouski Océanic netminder Philippe Desrosiers in the crease.
The SUBWAY Super Series is in Bathurst, New Brunswick for the first time in the event’s history. Playing in the city of approximately 14,000 on the shores of northeastern New Brunswick, the Acadie-Bathurst Titan developed such NHL talent as Florida Panthers goaltender Roberto Luongo, Boston Bruins two-way centreman Patrice Bergeron and Anaheim Ducks defender Francois Beauchemin.
Team QMJHL features a good mix of experienced veterans and young talent on the roster, headlined by Toronto Maple Leafs first round draft pick Frédérik Gauthier of the Rimouski Océanic. He is joined offensively by Rimouski teammate Anthony DeLuca, Sherbrooke Phoenix forward Daniel Audette, and Chicoutimi Saguenéens leading scorer Laurent Dauphin. A strong cast of 1997 born performers will be sure to draw scouting minds from across Eastern Canada with draft eligible blueliners Jérémy Roy (Sherbrooke), Alexandre Carrier (Gatineau) and Nicolas Meloche (Baie-Comeau) all in the lineup.
Defenceman Nikolas Brouillard (Québec) was a late addition to the QMJHL roster after it was discovered Rimouski defender Samuel Morin will not be able to compete due to injury. Baie-Comeau Drakkar forward Jérémy Gregoire, who attended Canada’s Summer Development Camp in Calgary, will also be sidelined due to injury.
While the QMJHL has the benefit of fresh legs, Russia will have the added firepower of three scoring threats added to its lineup. Moncton Wildcats sniper and St. Louis Blues prospect Ivan Barbashev will slot in alongside Cape Breton Screaming Eagles teammates Evgeny Svechnikov and Maxim Lazarev. All three players have recorded more than a point-per-game this season.
It’s a must win for the QMJHL tonight in Game 5 to keep the CHL alive in the series down 8 points to 4. The puck drops at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre at 7:00pm ET. Catch all the action on Sportsnet 360, Ontario and Pacific. The game will also air on TVA Sports.
