2013 SUBWAY Super Series Wrap Up

The Canadian Hockey League emerged victorious in the 2013 edition of the SUBWAY Super Series with a 3-2-1 record over Team Russia winning by a 10-8 margin in points.
The 2013 win is the ninth series victory for the CHL in the 11-year history of the event last winning in 2011 before earning a bronze medal at the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta.
CHL clubs were led by 62 NHL Drafted players including 19 first round picks along with top 2014 NHL Draft eligible prospects like Aaron Ekblad (Barrie Colts) and Sam Reinhart (Kootenay Ice). Three players including Team QMJHL’s Jonathan Drouin (Halifax Mooseheads), Team OHL’s Jake Paterson (Saginaw Spirit), and Team WHL’s Griffin Reinhart (Edmonton Oil Kings), all competed with Canada’s National Junior Team last season in Ufa, Russia.
Drouin, along with Team QMJHL’s Charles Hudon (Chicoutimi Sagueneens) led the CHL in scoring in the 2013 SUBWAY Super Series with four points each in two games. Greg Chase (Calgary Hitmen) had two goals in one game for Team WHL while teammates Taylor Leier, Derrick Pouliot, and Brendan Leipsic (Portland Winterhawks) each had two points in two games as did Jujhar Khaira (Everett Silvertips). The OHL was led by Chris Bigras (Owen Sound Attack) with two assists in two games. Top scorers for Team Russia were Igor Rudenkov with three goals and two assists for five points in six games, followed by Ildar Shiksatdarov and 2014 NHL Draft prospect VladimirTkachyov who each scored two goals and two assists for four points in six games. Team Russia’s Ivan Nalimov made an incredible 154 saves and earned three Player of the Game honours with a 3-1-0 record including a 2.25 goals-against-average and a .945 save percentage. Team QMJHL’s Zachary Fucale (Halifax Mooseheads) and Team WHL’s Tristan Jarry (Edmonton Oil Kings) each earned wins with a goals-against-average of 2.00. Click here for Goalie Stats.
The last four years of the SUBWAY Super Series have been extremely close with the series outcome decided in the final game each time. For the third straight season the series was decided by just a two-point margin while both the CHL and Russia scored 17 goals in regulation play.
The CHL now has an overall 11-year record of 47-14-5 while Russia’s record stands at 19-44-3. The QMJHL overall record is 12-7-3, with the OHL holding a 19-2-1 record, and the WHL a 16-5-1 record all-time. Click here for event history and results.
The series is used as an evaluation for Canada’s National Junior Team that will compete in the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship to be played in Malmo, Sweden, in December. Hockey Canada will announce its final Selection Camp Roster on Monday December 2, 2013.
